Don’t worry, we’re not turning into an off-road specialist website, we just happen to like some of the big stuff and especially if it’s going to be a bad winter.
Land Rover has finally pulled the covers off their Freelander replacement, the Discovery Sport. I’m not sure having a Ranger Rover Sport and a Disco Sport is the best naming convention but you can’t argue with the looks.
Looking at the pictures it seems that the name change might be related to the massive increase in quality over the previous model and the move into the premium small 4×4 arena. Fighting it out with the budget Asian brands doesn’t seem like a good idea so Land Rover have fairly stepped up their game for this model.
Some of the new tech they’ve added includes:
- up to four 12V power points and six USB charging sockets
- pedestrian airbag
- autonomous emergency braking
- 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
Since they know everyone will go for the same engine, LR seem to only be selling the new Disco Sport with the 2.2 litre SD4. What are the chances of them stuffing in a petrol V8 and making a real sport version? This would be much more exciting!
With a starting price of just under ÂŁ30,000 I would choose this over an Evoque any day of the week. If funds allowed it, I would also choose this (even a used second hand one) before one of the small 4x4s from the East.
