Our road trip route.

Postby kieranv » Wed Feb 25, 2015 8:01 pm

We sat last night and made a rough route. Still subject to change depending on suggestions and which roads are open at the time.

Day 1 (26/05) - Glasgow - Newcastle to catch the ferry at 17:00 (140 miles)
Day 2 (27/05) - Ferry arrives in A'Dam at 09:00
A'dam - Nurburgring (216 miles)
Stay in Nurburg
Day 3 (28/05) - Nurburg - Freiburg bia Baden Baden & Route 500 (357 miles)
Stay in Freiburg
Day 4 (29/05) - Freiburg to Interlaken via Lucerne (138 miles)
Stay in Lauterbrunnen
Day 5 (30/05) - Spend morning doing mountain passes around the area
Afternoon visit Trummelbach & Reichenbach falls
Stay in Lauterbrunnen
Day 6 (31/05) - Lauterbrunnen to Geneva via montreux & Morzine (169 miles)
Stay in Geneva area
Day 7 (01/06) Geneva - Nice via N85 (309 miles)
Stay in Nice
Day 8 (02/06) Rest day in Nice, drive to Monaco for a wander
Stay in Nice
Day 9 (03/06) - Nice - Dijon on quickest route (410 miles)
Stay in Dijon
Day 10 (04/06) Dijon - Reims on country roads (184 miles)
Stay near Reims
Day 11 (05/06) Reims - Amsterdam via Eindhoven (312 miles)

This leaves one day extra free for anything we need it for. Obviously this misses out Stelvio, but if it's open then we may do that instead and Lake Como instead of Nice.

The only areas of concern for me are the long trip on day 3 and day 9

Fernando, PartickSteve and I done niece to Riems in a day. Shouldn't be a problem, just stick to the speed limits and that'll be about €75 in tolls. I was €125 in tolls going from Nice to Calais. :o

Route Napoleon is a great road just watch out for banzai drivers overtaking on blind corners!

if you are looking for good bits to drive around Nice, up around Sospel is nice (Where a few of the Monte-Carlo rally stages are held sometimes.) The road from Eze Village to La Turbie (Great Views over Monaco) then the road from la Turbie down to Monaco is really nice. Also worth doing a lap of the track since you'll have your car there!

I'll be doing one this year, but at a very different pace to the last one as I'll have SWMBO next to me.

Is there anything anyone would change about our planned route? Some people on another forum have menthioned they Think we're trying to do too much in the time we have? Although, they're also wondering why we're doing it in an mx5 and not a 5 series bmw.

You don't really have any massive miles to do on that.
Euro M'way type roads are very easy for big miles.
Try and avoid buying petrol in Holland, very pricey.

5 series? Only if it was an 'M'.

Route looks good, if you're worried about day 9 I'd do Nice to Geneva vie the Napoleon route, then Geneva to Reims the next day? Like I said, I've done Nice to Reims in a day before, and had a great night out after it, so you're not stretching yourself. Personally I think it's a great route and think the MX-5 will be great fun. We learned a few lessons in 2012, getting out of Turin in rush hour was described as "character building". So at least you'll be better prepared for the 2016 Gumbaw trip. :D

Just an idea but you could also go from Nice to Annecy along route napoleon then onto Reim the next day.

Annecy is nice place to stay and means you also get a decent drive most of the way up from Nice instead of motorway.
