What makes a future classic?

Forums been a bit quiet of late so I thought i'd try and start a bit of friendly debate.

There's a group of Facebook called 'Modern classic cars' they post up links to cars for sale on eBay etc that they consider to be "future classics".
They post the odd belter but more recently they have been posting utter tosh. One day they'll post a nice low mileage Clio Trophy and the next they'll post up a Clio 1.6 Mardi Gras or whatever and i'm sitting there like a confused toddler.
The other thing that I've noticed in my habit of scrolling through Auto Trader are traders that advertise a car as a "certain future classic" or an "investment". So you read through the advert for the Subaru Impreza super duper P1 Type UK WRX STI or whatever, FSH, Standard unmolested example guaranteed investment then you look at the mileage... 175000miles on the clock!!! ON WHAT PLANET IS THAT A FUTURE CLASSIC OR GUARANTEED INVESTMENT!?
When I bought my R26 I did have 1 eye on the chance that it MIGHT make me money in 10 or 15 years time (if it lasts that long) at the very least I don't think i'll lose money on it if it stick to doing no more than 2 or 3k miles per year. It's certainly not going to make me a fortune.

So I ask you, what do you think makes a future classic? Does it have to be a limited edition? A Ferrari? Standard specification or are small subtle mods allowed? Or is a car only a classic in the eye of the beholder?

Also, anyone up for a run at some point in July?

On a long enough timeframe, everything is a classic.

A Mk2 Sierra 1.8LX, a not particularly special car, pretty run of the mill, but now people are asking £3000.

I genuinely paid £200 for the last Sierra I had about 15 years ago.

Or Mk2 XR2's now at £6/7+k. I paid £1100 for my absolutely mint one in 2005, which at the time was strong money.

Was discussing this the other night with my brother, he had a Mk2 Escort Harrier maybe 20 years ago? Swapped a Honda CR125 for it, done some work on it and sold it on as a shell. These days would be £10-15k?

Standard will generally be the ones to hold their value at the highest point, sometimes minor tasteful mods won't really effect the price, but from what I've seen, the heavily modded ones will be of lower value.
