Boxster Conversions

After a rather random post on PH, I now know that Audi V8s bolt up to 986 gearboxes and fits in the bay quite nicely.

This opens up a whole host of ideas. Great chassis, spot on balance and 350bhp from the get go.

I wonder if it fits in a 996 too?

Won't be much, those v8s are tiny in dimensions.

It will raise the centre of gravity, but I'm not sure if it's noticeable? The flat 6 is hefty lump and slung low.

Still toying with option of a 'cheap' Boxster S.
Not sure I would want to go Audi V8 route though.
More likely want a 996 or 997 engine dropped in.
Or just strip it down a bit and enjoy it as is.

I am certain somebody here will know better. But didn't Porsche themselves once fit an Audi V8 in a 911 prototype as a feasibility study?

The long term idea would have been to develop it's own V8 eventually. But the project was scrapped as it impacted driving characteristics and did not provide the significant performance improvements they hoped for. (Also I bet cooling would once again be a problem.) There is also a cult about the flat 6 and it's character. Every petrol head can spot a Porsche by it's noise alone. If they would tamper with them it would probably scare away some of the loyal 911 customers. (The 996 headlights are an example of just how conservative some of the buyers are when it comes to 911.)

Mind you, that was a 911, the Boxster and Cayman are mid engined, so I would not expect that much of an impact on overall handling. Also they are generally bought by different customers. Many of which I am sure would probably welcome a V8 option. I could see a V8 Cayman be a very successful car, only problem being once again that it would directly rival the 911, and I doubt Porsche wants that.

There is an off the shelf LS V8 conversion for the 996, however it raises the centre of gravity and does make handling a wee bit more exciting. Not sure if it fits straight into a Boxster of Cayman? Space is an issue, more of an issue than cooling. The flat six engine does serve a purpose due to it's low centre of gravity, but gives other issues due to it's dimensions. I've not seen an Audi V8 in one? Are the dimensions bigger than the LS1?

Do you know v8s actually have a lower centre of gravity?

Just not in this situation as you're using the Porsche box.

Yep. With a v8 the heads can stay at the same height but the crank and gearbox can be closer to the ground.

With a flat engine the whole lot has to be at the same height, above the manifolds and they are slightly further out too.

the Porsche boxes are set at a certain height tho obviously so strapping a v8 in means the weight sits higher.
