Classic Car Auction Watch, July 2017

Once again, that’s another hour of my life that’s been distracted away by an outstanding (INSANE, in social media speak) auction catalogue of classic sports and race cars at the up and coming Silverstone Classic Sale, 29th & 30th July 2017

I was just going to post up a link on the forum and TT Facebook page, but I felt the need to point out a few gems and encourage others to spend a bit of time day dreaming.

These are three cars that stood out to me. They aren’t the fastest, most expensive or even the ones I would spend my own money on, they are just cool and not something you see everyday.

1967 Mercedes-Benz 230S ‘Universal’

One of the joys of these classic car auctions is seeing cars you’ve never even heard of before, and the Merc Universal certainly fits the bill.

Thought to be one of only three RHD cars left, this SEVEN SEAT Mercedes estate came from an era when the company was building it’s reputation for creating the most well made cars in the world.

There’s no ISOFIX in sight, but can you think of a cooler way to take the entire family out for the day?

Evanta Motor Co. Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato Recreation

A kit car? Not quite. This is an incredible feat of precision coach building by the Evanta Motor Company, ran by new Wheeler Dealers presenter, Ant Anstead.

With ultra rare Aston Martin DB4GT Zagatos now costing multiple six figure amounts, this recreation, based on a 6.0 litre V12 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, seems a bargain at £80k – £100k. Imagine how many hours must have gone into building it!

There will be plenty of people who think this is like building a MR2 Ferrari, but I’d be more than happy to turn up to a TT Breakfast Meet in this beauty.

1964 VW Type 2 (T1) ‘Double Door Walk-through’ Camper

Some people are obsessed with classic VW campers and that can be seen by the guide price here: £70k – £80k. I’m not THAT big a fan of them but this is a lovely example.

You could take this to classic car shows every weekend, sleep in it and still win prize after prize. Get the costumes out and this could give you a Goodwood Revival to remember.

Family trips aside, and I don’t mean to hark on about our own events, this would provide some handy shelter for the next wet weekend at Knockhill or in a certain car park at New College Lanarkshire, Motherwell.

With the virtual lottery win now spent, it’s over to you to tell us which cars you’d go for….
