Edinburgh Airport Race the Runway 2017

Ever fancied having the chance to VMAX your car down the runway of a live international airport? If you’ve watch Bad Boys or Fast & Furious 6 once too often then you probably do!

For 24 lucky participants (plus a few bikes) this dream became a reality on Wednesday 30th of August 2017 when Beatson Cancer Charity teamed up with Edinburgh Airport to host their Race the Runway event.  For £395.00 per car, competitors got at least two full speed runs down the second runway at Edinburgh Airport with planes taking off only a few metres away.

The range of cars was nearly as wide as that of a TT Breakfast Meet with everything from a VW Amarok, Ford Focus RS, Chrysler Crossfire, as well as Porsche, Audi and Aston Martin.

The Aston Martin runners were courtesy of event sponsors, and friends of TT, Leven Car Company, who also had a couple of tasty Rolls Royce cars sitting back in the hanger.

As well and raising money for charity and getting to drive massively faster than you ever get to on the roads, there was also a competition for the fastest cars of the day.

Having hedged my bets between the 991 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cab and the Audi R8 V10 Plus, I wasn’t disappointed, with the Audi taking fastest time of the day and the 911 taking the highest top speed (190.8mph).

….or at least it would have been the fastest top speed had it not been for the quartet of bikes, including stunt champion, Kevin Carmichael. Dennis Hobbs managed the top speed of the day with 192.8 on his BMW (don’t ask me the model!).

It was great to see TT Breakfast Meet regular Mark Syme getting the overall trophy and hopefully we’ll see him along again this month.

The real winners on the day were Beatson Cancer Charity with £11,400 being raised for what is a great cause that’s close to the hearts of many of you. Many thanks to Edinburgh Airport Chief Executive, Gordon Dewar, for making it all happen.
