Peugeot 5008 Review and Test Drive

Remember before we had MPVs when we had people carriers? It’s funny how these vehicles have been re-branded and are now seemingly a bit cooler and more acceptable than they were in the 90s and early 2000s.

My first experience of a MPV was back around 1990ish when my dad brought home a Toyota Space Cruiser rather than his normal company Corolla. Being eight at the time I thought this was the best thing ever. Sliding doors, sliding windows, seats you could fold flat or swivel – what more could you want in a car? You could basically have most of your friends in it and have a party.  The fact that it was van with windows was probably lost on eight year old me.

Coming back to 2016 and the MPV market, and cars themselves, have changed a lot. The one thing that hasn’t changed is that children still love them.

The Peugeot 5008 that we tested was the 2.0l 150PS diesel in ‘Allure’ trim. This means that it comes with plenty of toys including; heads up display, touch screen nav display with DAB and plenty of connection options, cruise control, panoramic roof, auto hand brake and reversing camera. The only thing it was really missing to keep children amused, and give adults peace and quiet, was TV screens on the back of the seats.

Comparing the 5008 to rivals such as the Vauxhall Zafira, Ford S-Max and Citroen Grand C4 Picasso it’s got a decent amount of French flair to make it stand out in a car park. The swooping front and rear lights certainly give it a sense of speed even when standing still.

Out on the road it’s certainly quick enough and feels perkier than many 2.0l diesels that are out there. Unfortunately the driving experience is let down somewhat by the combination of engine, gearbox and suspension that does still feel quite van like to drive. It’s not that it handles badly – it’s just not an enjoyable experience. Not having much experience of the current crop of rival MPVs then I’m not sure whether this is a common trait or not.

Driving experience might not be far up the list of desires when shopping for a MPV but price and space probably are. The 5008 Allure costs £26,345, slightly more than the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso but it does have 2506 litres of boot space with both rows of seats folded down. Having done of couple of tip runs we can testify that there’s not much you can’t fit in it!

As a value for money car for larger families the Peugeot 5008 fits the perfectly. For those who want slightly more driving thrills you might want to test drive some of it’s rivals.
