Race the Runway with Bugatti Veyron, Porsche 918 and friends

Sometimes you get invited to events and you just know they are going to be an amazing experience. 2.5km of former RAF Leuchars runway, a Bugatti Veyron and the prospect of hitting the double-ton in Scotland. When you add in that you’re doing it all to raise money for charity then it doesn’t get much better than that.

Here’s a brief overview of the day. Pictures can be found on Facebook

Sunday 2nd of October saw £8m worth of supercars descend on Leuchars Station (formerly RAF Leuchars) to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

The event, organised by Charles Dunphie, Regional Director for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, and Mark Ryan, Supercar Event Organiser, raised over £19,000 for the charity which aims to help soldiers and veterans of the British Army as well as their families.

More than 40 supercars congregated on the runway at Leuchars Station for a rare opportunity to drive their cars flat out with no speed limits.

The impressive list of cars was topped off by a £2m Bugatti Veyron Vitesse WRC and £600,000 Porsche 918 Spyder but also included 1980s bedroom wall poster car, the Lamborghini Countach and family hatchbacks like the VW Golf R.

With a trophy on offer for the driver who achieved the top speed on the day, competitors took off down the 2.5km taxiway (the runway is still active 24 hours a day for emergency use) with speeds being recorded over four runs.

A friendly but competitive day finished with the Bugatti Veyron taking top speed and the trophy:

Bugatti Veyron – 209MPH

Porsche 918 – 202.9MPH

Lamborghini Aventador – 190.9MPH

Co-organiser Mark Ryan said: “10 months of planning went into this event I just want to thank the Army, RAF, the volunteers who helped the event run smoothly and all the car owners who paid the entry fee and spent the day with us. A day of glorious sunshine, some of the fastest cars on the planet and raising money for charity make all the hard work really paid off”

Charles Dunphie said: “It was fantastic to get such an enthusiastic group of car owners along to support ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and for them to get a chance to really enjoy their cars in a safe environment. As well as raising money and having a brilliant day out this was a great opportunity to raise the profile of the charity and build the foundations for future events at Leuchars Station”

Ian, Bugatti Veyron owner said: “This was a great opportunity to safely see what the Veyron is really capable of, while raising money for a good cause.”

At an official speed 209MPH, this is the fastest that a road car has ever been recorded at in Scotland and is a feat unlikely to be beaten until next year’s event.
