Nobody is going to buy this 600hp/1000Nm Coupe from Polestar

That’s because Volvo/Polestar aren’t going to sell them in traditional dealerships, they will all be ordered online with two or three year subscriptions. Your monthly payment will give you all-inclusive use of the Polestar 1 as well as “features such as pick-up and delivery servicing and the ability to rent alternative vehicles within the Volvo and Polestar range”.

This seems like a bit of a genius stroke from Polestar:  create the most desirable car you’ve ever made and use it as a means to introduce the future of car ownership.

While we don’t know a lot about the Polestar 1 at the moment, we do know that it’s a beautiful looking 2+2 GT Coupe and that it’s a petrol/electric hybrid. Previously, this might have had alarm bells ringing, but with the aforementioned 600hp and 1000Nm, we’re looking forward to the new king of the YouTube dragstrip battles. These figures come from a combination of the electric motor producing 218HP and powering the rear wheels, and a Volvo’s 2.0 petrol engine powering the front wheels.

The Polestar 1 will be built on Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) but nearly 50% of the car is customised by Polestar. There’s no talk of what it will weigh but the body will be made of carbon fibre, which reduces weight by 230kg and will add stiffness to the structure.

When it arrives on the streets, the Polestar 1, with its electric range of 150Kms (93 miles), will have the longest range of any petrol/electric hybrid on sale.

Other technology to be pioneered in the Polestar 1 will be “Phone-As-Key technology” which will enable you to share access friends or family.

Sadly, Polestar will only be making 500 of the Polestar 1 per year and only in left hand drive. Were it to available in the UK, some sources are suggesting it would be valued at around £120k.

What we will get in the UK, although not until the end of 2019, will be the Polestar 2 and the Polestar 3, both fully electric cars. The Polestar 2 will be a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 3 will be a large SUV.
